You place a bet at home, travel the next day, open the same app and find that the betting screen no longer works.
Your password is fine. The balance is still there. The account hasn’t disappeared.
You’re just in a different place.
Sportsbooks don’t only check who owns the account. They also check where the user is standing when a wager is placed. Cross a national, state or provincial border and the rules may change before your phone even connects to the local network.
Your account and your location are separate
Having an account doesn’t mean you can place bets from anywhere.
A sportsbook may still let you log in, view open bets or withdraw funds while blocking new wagers. DraftKings, for example, separates account access from the right to bet in a particular US or Canadian jurisdiction.
That distinction catches travellers out.
The account belongs to the customer. The operator’s licence applies within a set territory. A valid login doesn’t override the second part.
Geolocation checks more than your IP
A sportsbook’s license applies to a specific jurisdiction – a country. To work, it needs to make sure you are in a place covered by the license. Quite often, it’s done through a simple IP address check. But modern systems may use more – GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, or mobile signals. Some also look for VPNs, proxies and remote-access tools.
That’s why a VPN often makes things worse. The IP address says one thing while the phone’s location data says another. The session gets blocked.
Sometimes the cause is less dramatic. Location services are off. Hotel Wi-Fi is routed through another region. The phone can’t get a clean GPS signal from a room facing a concrete wall.
The app may look broken. It’s really just unconvinced.
State and provincial borders count too
In the US, each state has its own betting regulation. Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania require users to be physically there when betting online. So, a player can lose access to their account by crossing a state line.
Canada has similar territorial splits. Ontario runs its own regulated online gambling market, so access available there shouldn’t be assumed to continue in another province.
The border doesn’t need a passport booth. The software still notices.
A familiar platform may work differently abroad
Travellers using Bet Jordan Sports Betting or another international operator should check local access rules before assuming the same service will work at their destination.
The question isn’t only whether sports betting is legal. The operator also needs permission to serve that market, and individual products may face separate restrictions.
One country may allow sports betting but restrict online casino games. Another may treat live betting, esports or certain competitions differently. Available payment methods can change too.
The app may look almost identical while the options underneath it are different.
Existing bets usually remain active
Leaving an approved area doesn’t normally cancel a wager that was validly placed before the trip.
The event can finish and the operator can settle the result. What usually stops is the ability to place another bet from the restricted location.
This becomes noticeable during live betting. A user may place one wager near the border, move a little farther, then see the next bet rejected because the platform ran another location check.
Some systems check location repeatedly rather than accepting one successful login for the whole session.
From the user’s side, it feels random. The app worked two minutes ago.
It checked again.
Border areas and airports get messy
Geolocation becomes less reliable near territorial boundaries.
Someone may be physically inside an approved state while their mobile connection passes through infrastructure on the other side. Modern systems use several signals to reduce mistakes, but borderline readings still fail.
Airports create another odd case. A traveller may have landed in an approved country but still be connected to airline Wi-Fi or a roaming network that reports the location badly.
Turning on precise location and switching to a normal mobile or local Wi-Fi connection may help. Trying five VPN servers from the arrivals hall probably won’t.
Check before the match starts
Before relying on a sportsbook abroad, check whether the operator serves that location, whether the product you want is available and whether withdrawals still work if wagering is blocked.
The account may travel with you. The licence doesn’t.
Sometimes the dividing line is a country. Sometimes it’s a river, a state road or the far end of an airport car park.
